Fran Ross, in her stinging comic novel Oreo, suggests in nearly sexual terms the loss of control her narrator feels in a well-stocked market. In his memoir Lucky Bruce, Bruce Jay Friedman described the pangs he feels shopping alongside glowing young mothers, those “home-wreckers who assemble at my local Whole Foods at five in the afternoon.”

I have a shopping list; a pen is gripped between my teeth. The pen will inevitably fail to work or fall and roll in a panko-coating of grit. Inevitably, too, the crucial item on my list will be sold out, so I must make enormous changes at the last minute. A few shopping lists are famous. One from Michelangelo survives. In the spring of 1518 he needed bread, fresh anchovies, and wine. A 1609 shopping list from Galileo survives, too, written on the back of a letter. Galileo desired, among other things, rice, spices, and sugar. Maybe he wanted a rice pudding. I hang on to shopping lists from memorable meals. I tuck them into the back pages of cookbooks or novels, where I find them years later, wondering what Cree or I was thinking, putting pork belly on everything.
